Latin at Future Academies
Future Academies is the leading front-line provider for Latin in state schools in England. We are unique for the emphasis we place on Latin, with all our schools offering 100 minutes per week on timetable for all students at Key Stage 3. Over the last decade, we have developed an excellent support programme to introduce Latin sustainably and at pace in some of the most disadvantaged areas of England.
We are supported by our Ofsted-Outstanding SCITT, which has trained over 40 Latin teachers from leading universities. We offer a complete and subject-specific CPD package for Latin teachers based around building ‘the habits’ of highly effective Latin teaching, which is linked to our curriculum and based on cognitive science.
We perform exceptionally well in terms of GCSE entries, progress, and achievement. At our schools, GCSE recruitment is between 25% and 40% of the cohort. We place a strong emphasis on recruitment at all levels of prior attainment. In our lead schools, cohorts have achieved Progress 8 scores of +1.5-2 grades.
From 2022 to 2025 Future Academies worked with over 40 non-selective state schools across England to deliver the Latin Excellence Programme on behalf of the Department for Education. The programme successfully:
- increased the proportion of disadvantaged students studying GCSE Latin in non-selective schools outside of London, the South East, and the East of England
- improved GCSE Latin attainment in the state sector
- provided participating pupils with access to enrichment and extra-curricular experiences connected to the study of Latin, including trips abroad.
- supported state schools to develop a sustainable Latin provision
- established four regional hubs in the South West, North West, North East and Yorkshire and Humber.

The Future Academies Curriculum
Developed from over a decade of experience, the Future Academies Latin Curriculum is suited to the demands of the state sector and champions the demonstrated impact of direct instruction in the classroom. It is designed to ensure every student is supported to excel in their study of Latin and is based around a coherent body of core knowledge, carefully broken down and cumulatively sequenced for mastery.
The curriculum is fully resourced with student booklets and teacher guides, supported by a comprehensive CPD platform. Sample curriculum resources can be found here, including the Key Stage 3 curriculum outline, long- and medium-term plans, student booklet samples, and student exemplars.
Our work with Oak National Academy means we also have an unrivalled repository of online lessons and curriculum materials with which schools across England have engaged.
The curriculum has been shown to have transformed students’ and parents’ views of Latin and ensured it is a popular and successful subject across all Future Academies schools, as well as our partner schools.
